Configuring your Chat domain
Overview
Configuring a Chat sub-domain sets up a dedicated Matrix messaging server for your organisation. Members' Matrix IDs will use this sub-domain (e.g. @pierre:yourcompany.com). This step requires your business domain to be verified first.
Prerequisites
- Business domain verified — see [Configuring your business domain](#)
- Access to your domain registrar's DNS settings
How to configure your Chat domain
1. In the Business dashboard, go to Chat under Collaboration configuration.
2. Enter your chat sub-domain and proceed.
3. Add all DNS records shown to your registrar's DNS settings.
4. Click Verify once the records have propagated.
DNS records to add
Add the following three CNAME records. All share the same target value shown in the Business dashboard:
| Type | Name | Target |
|---|---|---|
CNAME |
Chat | Value shown in the dashboard |
CNAME |
Tom | Value shown in the dashboard |
CNAME |
Matrix | Value shown in the dashboard |
After verification
Once the domain is verified, Twake Chat is provisioned for all members. The Chat app is automatically added to the home page of all members, allowing them to start messaging directly from their Twake Workplace.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Chat domain mandatory?
No. Only the main business domain is required to add members. Chat can be configured at any time afterwards.
What is the Matrix protocol?
Matrix is an open, decentralised messaging protocol. Twake Chat is built on Matrix, which means your organisation's chat server is federated and interoperable with other Matrix-based services.
What happens to existing members when I configure Chat?
Twake Chat is provisioned automatically for all existing members as soon as the domain is verified.
